We were getting something similar to that, but I cannot tie it directly to an update.
Login to your Web host has check to see if there are any performance analytic tools they have that can show bandwidth usage and IP traffic. Ours does. That information should narrow down if what you're experiencing is update related or malicious outside source related.
In our case, it was entirely malicious outside source related.
